Can Magsafe only charge or is it also possible to transmit data per usb?

I meant to make this thread as well. I think if it had data transfer capabilities Apple would have mentioned it, but that could be the Trojan horse here. Whenever the iPhone goes portless MagSafe will (presumably) have to have data transfer capability.

I posted in another thread but if magsafe lets them line up accessories (that little sticky out bit suggests it can) then they could add a smart connector to the back of the iphone in a year or two and that could do data transfer?

but with the magsafe wich is now on sale.. is there data transmit possbile.. i dont think so..

I don't think there is currently, but something along the lines of Direct Transfer setup could be used in the future. Whenever Apple finally removes the charging port, they will have to think of something. Maybe MagSafe 2 will have data transfer capabilities.

The 2020 Magsafe is likely to be a step on the road to portless iPhone, which will surely use inductive data coupling? Every year when my cardiac pacemaker (I'm an old guy) is checked its data is read by inductive coupling, which is of course a two-way thing so my ticker can be sped up or slowed down - scares the hell out of me.

When I think about it though, when have I ever used my iPhone's lightning connector for data? Since the day it came out of its box everything, and I mean everything, has been OTA, and because I use wireless charging it might just as well be portless now.

That would ultimately require another wireless standard for data exchange as the chargers are inductive. But the device can already speak Bluetooth, wifi and has cellular connectivity- my guess is the portless phones of the future will use one of these methods to communicate.

Ultimately I think wifi would be a faster method for updating data in all of these cases so it doesn't make sense to transfer data through MagSafe.

MagSafe is Apple’s way of letting you use your wired headphones while charging (inefficiently). It’s a grand accessories workaround conspiracy.

Magsafe is Apple buzzword for the magnet.
Wireless Charging is wireless charging.
Magsafe more effortlessly aligns the charging coils over each other. That is about it.
It is still a brilliant thing for what it is.

Neither one mingles with data transfer though.

Is there some type of data transfer happening with the new MagSafe cases, or did Apple add an NFC tag to the new cases? When I put my phone into the case, a ring shows up on the phone that matches the case color. If this is happening through MagSafe, maybe there is data transfer capability that Apple hasn't yet publicly acknowledged.
Has anyone torn apart a MagSafe case yet? I'm not volunteering mine, though I figure some millennial on YouTube has done it by now 😁

It’s been reported that it is NFC in the cases.

Apple cases have an NFC coil based on teardown photos. Most third-party cases don't.

Transfing data via iTunes using Wi-Fi isn’t great, and it takes much longer to do versus using a wired connection.

I like what @VSMacOne said, maybe MagSafe 2 will have data transfer 🤞🏼

Yup @mbawkher, it’s almost a guarantee at this point, especially after the stupid legislation they’re trying to pass in the EU to force all phone manufacturers to switch to USB-C. I don’t see Apple doing that in the iPhone. I think they’ll go straight to fully wireless and skip another port.

Would that not be contradictory to the upcoming requirements in the EU as the device then still doesn’t have the port they want?

Either way I’ll be happy for the day my iPads and iPhones aren’t forced to use different cables anymore.

How does the Magsafe battery pack tell the iPhone how much energy it has left?

My understanding is that as Lonny as the phones do wireless charging, there’s no need to include a port. So it makes sense that Apple is positioning MagSafe as the future.
