Having a USB-C port on the iPhone wouldn’t guarantee anything as far as compatibility with any USB-C cable. That is why Apple includes Lightning to USB-C cable. As it is now, you can use the iPhone with pretty much any USB-C charger brick.Would that not be contradictory to the upcoming requirements in the EU as the device then still doesn’t have the port they want?
Either way I’ll be happy for the day my iPads and iPhones aren’t forced to use different cables anymore.

I still have plenty of lightning to USB-A cables and chargers that still work. I shouldn’t have to create more plastic and electronic waste just to appease the short sided do-gooders who think they are unifying technology. With Apple’s solution, I can use both USB-A and USB-C.But the idea is to harmonise the charging port on the device. The port on the charger side is often times usb-c already of course.

It is only half proprietary, Since the iPhone doesn’t care what kind of charging brick it is plugged into, it will adapt and charge. That is why Apple provides the Lightning to USB-C cable or USB-A, etc.Good point for the short term but long term having no proprietary cables flooding on the market creating a two cable/ports world ( iPhones and iPad differing mostly already) in even Apple’s product lineups will be what’s coming.
Since NFC uplink speeds are not more that 0.8Mbps (100 kilobytes/sec), it is not practical to use it for data transfer. Just because you have Bluetooth which is much better for the purposeCan Magsafe only charge or is it also possible to transmit data per usb?
As of now some apple stores use MagSafe Raiser stands for their demo devices. These stands have firmware and participate in process of updating demo devices. So it’s not just charging…
Might be a feature that is going to be unlocked later, when more devices on the market can benefit from this.
My friend works at Apple store and they had to replace their stands last week because of firmware issues. And without that stand devices wouldn’t update.Seriously doubt that. As already mentioned NFC is extremely slow. Not to mention there's a much faster and reliable way to transfer updates to demo iPhones known as Wi-Fi.
