Can Mountain Lion OSX boot from external USB3.0 HDD?

Hi,

Depending on the price of the FusionDrive configuration on the new Imac & pricing on thunderbolt drive. I wonder for an affordable option if OSX can use USB3.0 SSD-III for the primary bootable drive & perhaps use the local HDD for file storage...etc?

Is this achievable?

I have booted Mountain Lion from FW and USB2/3 HDD's before and it's worked very well.
