I recently purchased a 2017 nTB MacBook Pro. I had a external HD that was previously used exclusively with a 2011 & 2013 MacBook airs. I decided to transfer some files to my new MacBook Pro. No issues.
After plugging it back into my Air a few days later, I noticed that the drive was extremely slow and that all my folder/subfolders were empty.
I had to resort to a data recovery specialist who claimed it was due to erosion of the disk and had to fork over $1000. He was able to recover all my data.

Cut to a few days ago, I plug my new HD into my MacBook Pro. Transfer some files to my desktop, everything is fine.
I then plug back my external drive into my Air. Transfer some files back. No issue.
I now plug back my hard drive into my Pro... It doesn't appear on my desktop. In system info, I see my drive. Disk utility shows an empty 1tb hard drive. Tried to use first aid but it comes back OK. I see a unreadable volume error on the manufacturers program.

Do you think this could be cause by the air/pro hard drive connection?

What kind of drive is it exactly?

You should be fine. I shuffle a couple different USB hard drives around between my 3 Macs and 2 PC's without any problems.

Are you sure you didn't just unmount the drive properly (or forget to unmount before you disconnected) and the disk just needs to be checked for errors? That will cause Mac OS to not mount the drive, even though you can see it in disk utility.

it’s a seagate drive. It was unmountes properly.
I tried to use first aid in disk utility but no avail.

What disk FORMATS are you using?
That can make a difference.

Use HFS+ on ALL your external drives (except those that touch PCs).
