I bought an extra phone accidentally on Verizon (at full retail with no sim) and my friend who got his preorder in late on AT&T wants to buy it from me. Can he just put his SIM into the phone and it'll work or is it not compatible for some reason?

Yes he can. How did you order it? I tried to order it and there was no option to do so without a contract.

Since the 6 hasn't been released yet, I don't think anyone can confirm. That said, I have a Verizon iPhone 5c and it works just fine with AT&T and T-Mobile (even LTE).
Verizon states on their website that they do not lock any of their LTE phones.

There you have it. That's refreshing for me since I can't port my AT&T phone number over till Monday when my contract expires.
So it looks like I'll be able to throw in my AT&T SIM card and be able to be reached all weekend.
