im kind of in a rush to go pick up my grandmother and didnt really have time to read, just to try and help you, sorry for not having time

I will still have my desktop to sync to...

I currently use my laptop for very basic tasks such as email and printing etc THEREFORE my iPhone CAN replace it (for my purposes) if i can find the right apps for the job.

It can if you are a basic computer user. It serves the bare necessities including email, web browsing, and basic word processing.

If you're 12 inches tall I suppose it could.

Why is it so hard for people to let go of laptops

I only use it for email and the odd print job, of course an iPhone can replace it... We just have to find the apps.

I dont use my laptop for number crunching, powerpoint presentations, hard core spreadsheets etc .. i literally switch it on, recieve the email attachment and then send to printer. switch off, done!

Why do people get so highly stung when someone can actually replace there laptop for an iPhone... ? It can be done depending on usage?

Can my iPhone replace the paper map in my car:
YES! for 1.99 i bought Ordnance Survey emaps.

Can my iPhone replace my SatNav:
YES! Already has, My TomTom was sold.

Can my iPhone replace my PSP
YES! Sold it as i hardly ever used it, but use my iphone for lots of games.

Can my iPhone replace my Media Centre Remote:

Can My iPhone replace my kindle?
YES! I use the kindle app now instead.

Can my iPhone replace my iPod/Mp3 player
YES!

Can my iPhone replace my Skype/MSN restrictions of being tied to a PC

It can do lots of things, and i ONLY USE MY LAPTOP FOR BASICALLY EMAIL AND THE ODD PRINT JOB of course it can replace it... the aim of this thread is what is the best way, feedback from apps or services you use that help me resolve my unsolved issues such as a good GTD and print app etc....

So why are we here?

So why are we here?

Agghghhhhhh

To find out the best way to do so...

ie: feedback on apps/services and ways you use your iPhone to do the tasks i listed (both the ones i can/already do and the ones i am unable to do) Others mentioned printing apps, office apps etc and GTD apps that i am looking at...

For example you may know of an awesome print app that you actually use EVERY DAY but i am unaware of it and with all the apps available will unlikely find it...

Its just a thread to see if its possible fro ME to replace MY laptop and the things "I" do with it...

There is a list in the first post advising what i would like to be able to do with my iPhone and lists of apps i currently use to achieve these tasks.

Try out the iPhone Applications forums, they'll have better recommendations over there. I'd say get a Dropbox account though, it'd make things easier to transfer between your iPhone and desktop.

yea, you can replace the laptop entirely except for syncing, backing up, and good web browsing. i use my iphone for everything except write essays for college, write music (im a music major), printing because ive yet to find a good app, little things that an iphone cant do like video converting and such, and coming on here :D

For downloading files from the Web, nothing beats Safari Download Manager. It integrates perfectly with Safari and allows multiple concurrent downloads, resuming downloads, etc. It is best coupled with iFile, an excellent file management utility.

While not exactly what your suggesting, my iPhone/iPad combo replaces my need for my laptops. I am planning on replacing the laptops with more powerful desktop machines in the near future.
Essentially a full laptop is overkill for what I need to do on-the-go. The iPones/iPads portability, connectivity and battery life trumps the extra power from my MBP.

I'm confused by all the angst over the idea of replacing a laptop with the iPhone. I use a desktop iMac, my iPhone, and I don't even own a laptop.

For TV viewing, I would suggest EyeTV. It has the remarkable feature of accessing your recorded TV library from any wifi spot. So, go ahead and watch the "Seinfeld" you recorded last night while having a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

I use an app called airmouse to control my desktop in one room and watch hulu on a mirrored screen in the TV room.

You can also connect your iPhone to a projector and offer powerpoint-like presentations. It takes some work, but the results so far for me have been great.
