I've been having a lot of fun upgrading my old G4 Powermac Digital Audio (CPU, video card, USB 2.0, RAM, DVR, etc.) and now its very satisfying to use. But I can't help wondering if I could make some use out of the space occupied by the worthless zip drive. Is it possible to install a second optical drive in this bay?

On the other hand, this could also just be a symptom of compulsive upgrademania -- maybe I've spent enough on this thing already.🙄

I have heard it said that you can't
install another optical drive (not
easily anyway) but you can install
another hard drive there. Maybe
someone else can offer more
explanation.

Its likely a 3.5" slot instead of the larger 5.25" slot needed for an optical drive. You could probably fit another hard drive in its place.

I believe you can hack an extra 5.25 bay into those Macs. I'm clueless to where I saw that though.

Hey 8th man,

I know this is tangential and off-topic, but I was wondering what you upgraded on your Digital Audio. I'm typing on one right now, and was wondering to do with it recently. I'm especially interested in the PVR aspect.

So far, I've only added USB 2.0 and put in 2 x 120GB Seagates. I might replace the ZIP drive with a 3rd 120GB Seagate.

I think you're right -- that's all this box needs.

LOL. Also, instead of a card reader, you can put a nice 3.5" mountable USB/firewire hub in there. I've heard they often cause boot problems though, so be careful.
