Hello, I have a major issue with copying any data from my primary hard drive in my MBP. Transfer always stops, and I am given error code 36, I/O error. Is there any way to deal with this so I can copy all my data?

Can you please describe the issue in more detail? What kind of external drive do you have (format, connection type, etc)? Are you trying to copy the entire disk (in which case you should use SuperDuper) or just select files? If select files, does it always fail on a particular file, or after a set amount of time?

Are you using a WinXP-formatted external drive? If it is and the drive is formatted as NTFS, then you cannot do that. MacOS X can read but not write NTFS. However, both MacOS X and WinXP can read and write to FAT32.

None of the disks I am trying to copy to will work. It always stops on a particular file. I used diskwarrior to try and repair the disk to no avail. Does it look like my data's gone?

What filesystems are involved?

I have a weak feeling it might be path depth issues.

HFS+ to either HFS+ or FAT32

Looks like I have a solution, though.
I am copying the data in small sections, and if any data transfer fails, then I simply delete the corrupt file, and keep on going.
