I see a leopard update in software update and i go through the steps to dl and it says it can't install it and it is moved into the trash due to insufficient privileges, even though i'm using an admin account??

Try repairing your drive's permissions, as it sounds like something has gotten messed up which is preventing Software Update from writing files to locations it ought to be able to.
