My friend just got a new iPhone, her first iPhone.

She just wants to sync her music manually, dragging what she wants to her phone.

But for some reason when she goes to Music on her iPhone it is showing the red arrows on all her music? How can she manually manage her music and get rid of those red arrows?

    Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about red arrows with a cloud icon? Those are songs in the 'cloud'. They have been purchased with the iCloud account that is logged in and you can download them anytime you want.

Hmm, she says when she clicks them it just plays them, doesn't download them. No way to get rid of that and just sync what you want?

That was not much information to go with!!!
But it seems that she turned on Apple Music OR she enabled iTunes Match.

Settings > Music > Switch OFF "Show Apple Music"

Settings > iTunes & App Store > Switch off Automatic Downloads on "Music"

Delete the whole music library (Make sure everything is backed up.

Re-sync the iPhone in iTunes and you should just see the music that she has sync'ed to the phone.

You can delete it in "manage storage" section, which can be accessed by searching "Storage" in settings app.
Or you can use third party apps in Mac or Windows to delete everything inside "iTunes_Control" folder.
    I recommend first way.

You click on the cloud icon to download, click the title or the artwork will stream the music.

Another think i found is select the item (song / album / video) then click the 3 dots, then select remove from my library. I had to do this on every iOS device even when signed in with my same ID. Bit annoying but it works
