can only type one letter at a time in safari search

if i type something in the safari search bar, then want to go back and add another work or words somewhere in that text, i can only add one letter at a time... then the cursor jumps to then end. then i have to go back and add another letter, etc.

is there a way to change this? (it doesn't happen in safari on my iPhone... just on our iMacs!)

I tried several times to reproduce this issue, but can't. I'm able to type an initial search string and then edit it wherever needed in the search bar without the cursor jumping to the end. I'm using the Monterey beta on an M1 Mac Mini.

What macOS version are you using? Does it happen when you try to edit in a text document?

It happed on both my iMac and hubby's.... we are both on big sur. both are the new M1 iMacs.

i can insert stuff anywhere else (i.e. notes, word doc, etc). also... here on mac rumors.

it's only the search bar! and it's so annoying cuz i'm forever wanting to change or add to my search criteria and have to click.... type a letter... click again next to that letter... etc etc etc. i though maybe there was a setting for insert on/off.

And just out of curiosity: you're using a mouse and not a trackpad? Have you experimented with your mouse or trackpad settings? Does it behave differently if you use the arrow keys on your keyboard? Do you have any Safari extensions installed? And this is a real stretch, but does it happen with different search engines? I'm trying to narrow down the variables.

we both use a mouse... no trackpad.

not sure about safari extensions i don't think i have any....


well poop! i love bing's new picture every day and i hate google.... i may have to rethink my search engine!
