OS X is clever enough to 'reopen windows on restart' but not apparently clever enough to remember that I like iTunes on my second 'space' and Photoshop on the third etc....

Any way to 'jog its memory'??

Genius! I'm pretty sure I had already set something like this somewhere in system preferences but can't remember seeing this right-click context menu so will hope that does it.

Thanks!

Sadly those ****ers from Apple neutered Spaces and also took away the option to assign applications to specific via System Preferences.

I don't know if it is because of Totalspaces or not but many OSX apps restore to the same space they used to be in. I recently had two crashes with loads of windows pdfs, browsers, .. all over the place and it did restore at least the preview stuff properly. I think word too. Chrome didn't because Chrome doesn't restore automatically but asks whether to restore so it starts on the first desktop and than opens everything there.
I never assign one app to a Desktop because I spread them out.
