Can osx write to blu ray?

Can osx write to blu ray or do I need 3rd party software like toast?

Just backing up some files, nothing too complex.

I would go the disk format. I would go with a big Thumb drive or better a USB 3 hard drive.
 
Thanks guys. I may do both blu ray and thumb drive. I don't have usb 3 though (older imac)
