I just downloaded ffmpeg and I have no idea how to use it. You need to use terminal? :(

Also, I've used handbrake in the past to convert MKV to MP4. Does that actually transcode the video files or does it just change the container?
If you are on a Mac, I would suggest using Subler to change the container on an MKV that contains the h.264 codec. Subler is much easier to use than ffmpeg.

Video-wise this is great news. Now where are all the PB (petabyte) drives for us to store these huge files? Haha.

"Generate video preview thumbnails"

basically when you fast forward or rewind you see the thumbnail of the video in the current location "scrubbing

do you guys have this setting on?
plex support says 30-80mb per file, i have around 2500 movies
most movies are like 1gb each
that's a lot of space for a cool feature

i have 400gb free space on my ssd, will i have enough space?
do you think the feature is worth it ?

my current plex library size is 17gb

Don't want to spoil anything. I think the ATV4 is a great client for ease of use and video playback compatibility support. However as pointed out the ATV platform doesn't support audio bitstreaming. It also does not support 24p video playback (it is locked to 60p as are many other plex client platforms including PS3, PS4 and Xbox One). That is one of the reasons I've kept my dedicated Mac Mini (late 2012 w/ MacOSX El Capitain and PlexHT) for so long.
Just upgraded my AVR to a Yamaha RX-A3040 which is Dolby Atmos capable so I'm looking to change the Platform for the Plex client to either Windows or Linux on a recent x86 CPU/Chipset platform to support all the modern high quality and high fidelity codecs and playback formats...
It's a bit more costly but if you like hi fidelity audio and video the cost for a "htpc" is modest in relationship to your other equipment.

Good Luck!

I agree with you, ease of use is where it excels.

Regarding 60P output for 24P content, my TV does reverse pulldown quite nicely, so that's a non issue for me.

Audio quality on the other hand is an issue. It's not super noticeable to me (perhaps in part because I have mediocre speakers), but there are certain scenes in certain titles where the difference between the Blu-ray and the streamed rip is fairly noticeable.

I used to be an HTPC person (Windows in my case). I found that the time spent configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting to not be worth the extra edge in ultimate compatibility and quality. The ATV4+Plex feels like I spend a minimal amount of time getting to my goal of having a digital library of my physical media. The HTPC felt like a hobby unto itself.

On the HTPC, despite my best efforts, there would always be some new thing that liked to interrupt a viewing session...maybe a windows update. Maybe Defender telling me I hadn't scanned for viruses in a while. Perhaps my mouse wanting to give me the exciting news that a new driver is available to download from the cloud! For every notification that I could figure out how turn off, there was always a new one to hit me a month or so later. With Windows 10 having "forced updates", I suspect this will be even worse.

I see you are running ElCap. This is probably way better than Windows for maintenance, but on the other hand I didn't think there was a way to get uncompressed high resolution audio out of a Mac, am I wrong on that? How are you accomplishing that?

[doublepost=1453412169][/doublepost]You are correct. No MacOSX version has support for audio bitstream output. That is why I am looking to switch os platform to Windows or Linux. I might stick with PlexHT on the new platform but I am wiling to try KODI if it would enable higher quality and fidelity in audio and/or video.

To stream full quality Blu-ray rips with Plex, have a reference at the streaming quality for Plex app below:
Available streaming qualities and the corresponding resolution of the stream:
20Mbps, 1080p
12Mbps, 1080p
10Mbps, 1080p
4Mbps, 720p
3Mbps, 720p
2Mbps, 720p
1.5Mbps, 480p
If your bandwidth are higher than 10Mbps, you will then able to stream Blu-ray movies in full 1080p by ripping Blu-ray to lossless MKV format with either MakeMKV or Pavtube ByteCopy.

Buy Infuse or MrMC and be done with it. They play everything. No transcoding is needed on any of your files.

I LOVE!!!! the way plex looks but Infuse is better for true bluray quality! if you want amazing sound and quality its "Infuse"

I don't know what the problem with your settings in Plex, but if your network can handle it Plex will stream in the original video quality of the bluray mkv.

but it doesn't support DTS it converts it to AC3

That's not a Plex problem. The Apple TV 4 doesn't pay a license for DTS. Plex will play DTS on setup boxes that pay the royalty. Infuse has a deal in place and pays a royalty for DTS, and DTS-HD.

I have both apps and have had infuse since before it was named infuse and was only available via jailbreak on the Apple TV 2. It does ok, but I always go back to Plex.

Plex doesn't play DTS with XBOX One either! :( I love the look and feel of Plex. Movie playback and audio is great! Now the feel of Infuse is good! not amazing and is missing a lot compared to Plex! but the Audio on Infuse is what sold me! It dominates Plex on that! Plex needs to get a deal to play DTS and DTS-HD
