I've been searching around but can't find the exact info I'm looking for. I want to upgrade to 4.0 and JB, but I would like to preserve my ability to unlock should I ever need to in the future. I'm wondering which method of JB I need to use to do so, keeping in mind that I do not need to unlock right now, but would like to keep in tact the ability to do so should the need arise somewhere down the line. My specs are as follows (not sure if they're all relevent, but I'm listing them anyway):

Launch Day 3GS
FW 3.0
PurpleRa1n RC2 JailBreak
Files NOT stored in Cydia
I DO Have ECID, iBEC, and iBSS files saved on PC
Windows XP Home
iTunes 8.2.0.23

if anyone could point me in the right direction it'd be much appreciated. Thanks

Since you have no hashes, iTunes will only let you upgrade to 4.0.1 and make you install iTunes 9.2.1 to sync. At some point in the past The iBec and iBSS files were supposed to allow downgrades, not sure if there is any option for you there.

First of all, get TinyUmbrella, download it, run it, save your 4.0.1 hashes now

I suggest you sit tight until new jailbreak and unlock are released, all devices all firmwares. Then you can go to 4.0.1, jailbreak and unlock.

We expect the new tools any day now.

There is no current jailbreak for 3GS on 4.0 (I know you are on 3.0)

You might be able to get a custom restore IPSW (jailbreak is in the IPSW) for 4.0, put your iDevice in recovery mode, with old bootrom and previously pwned it "should" bypass the security checks and let you install it. But, if it fails, you will have to go to 4.0.1 without a jailbreak.

Because your phone is Pwned, you can upgrade to a custom 4.0 firmware made with PwnageTool. Sadly, you will not be able to make the ipsw yourself, since you do not have a Mac, but you should be able to find one on the Internet. Make sure you do not install the stock 4.0.1 firmware, otherwise you will be locked out until new tools are released.

He can definitely shift-restore to a custom 4.0 firmware. He does not need to put it in recovery mode, it will work fine without it. He can even shift-upgrade.

You can obtain a custom 4.0 firmware made with PwnageTool and shift-restore to it. You will first have to upgrade to iTunes 9.1.2.

Doesn't Purplera1n give him the custom_restore option ?

Ahhh, you beat me with the 2nd post.

What happened to your initial response post ?
And the edit notation on posts is not showing up ?

What's going on here ?

Now it's all back, WOW, that was wierd ??????

What happened to your initial response post ?QUOTE]

As soon as I posted it I realized that I had forgotten his phone was currently pwned and could therefore take a custom firmware. I quickly edited it, but apparently not before you read it.

The 'edited' notation only shows if you edit your post after someone else posted. Because I got my first edit in before you replied, it didn't show. It does now because I re-edited to add more info.

Wait, does "pwned" mean unlocked, or does it mean jailbroken? Sorry for such such dumb, noobish question (I swear I'm not that much of a boob at this stuff lol), but I always though pwned meant unlocked, maybe because I associate it with pwnage tool, which unlocks correct? Anyway, in case I caused any confusion, my phone is NOT unlocked, nor has it ever been (that I know of, unless the PurpleRa1n JB unlocks it also, but I didn't think it did as it was billed as the "quick" JB method for people not looking to unlock). This is the kind of stuff that trips me up lol. I have the general knowledge of JB'ing and all that, but all the different methods to do it and their end results are always what end up confusing me.

And so basically my best bet currently is to just hold out until 4.0.1 JB is released and take it from there?

Again, thanks for all the info everyone

Pwned means iBoot jailbreak. Has nothing to do with unlock.
Spirit is a userland, not iBoot jailbreak

We have already answered the question about Purplera1n

Too late to create an SHSH for anything but 4.01, I'm afraid...

Actually, if you read the linked post on ModMyI, it appears someone has developed a way to create SHSH, provided you've captured a bunch of signed files during a previous 3.0 or 3.0.1 restore. This includes not just the IBEC and IBSS, but a bunch of other files used in the restore process. I don't know anyone who backed up all of these files; as far as I know, the Dev-Team only ever recommended backing up the IBEC and IBSS. *shrug*

Whoa, nice! I should try to keep up better with the latest developments...
