Can someone explain itunes match?

I have around 200 sonsg on my laptop none bought from itunes. I want to know more about itunes match and what it does to my existing songs.

Will I have to pay a fee? Can someone explain in simple terms the purpose of itunes match and how to use it. Does it help you save space on your device by streaming the music.
