I used to think this also, but now respectfully disagree. I dislike the standard earpods and thought I would not like airpods.

However when I tried the airpods, I was pleasantly surprised. They stay in my ears much better. In fact, they never fall out, including while exercising. They are the best.

I can only speculate the wires add just enough weight or resistance to make them fall out occasionally.

I recommend trying the airpods, even if earpods don't do it for you.

It’s true and been reflected in many reviews and hands on experiences with AirPods. Because if the lack of wires, they fit and stay in ear much better. No wire to tug on them.

I might have to now. My issue with the Apple earphones are the shape - it can dig into my ear without blocking outside noise.

My wired ones have more than once been rather violently yanked out of my ears when getting snagged on something. That and the tangling is a hassle. Now that I realize I can go wireless with my existing iphone 6, it may be time to enter the 21st century. I assume one can make phone calls and control volume and siri etc and do everything else with wireless and the clarity is good? Does one need fancy expensive ones, or will cheap ones do?

Only downsides I see are losing them more easily, battery drainage from bluetooth, and having to recharge. Anything else?

It’s still possible that AirPods sold after the wireless charging case is available will be sold with the wireless charging case as its default, though.

Feels like everyone is lost on the correct naming...:D

EarPods: not wireless, not earbuds, not earphones, not headphones

So are these apple wireless "airpods" worth 160? Or are there just as good cheaper wireless ear thingys that work well? Annoying that you can't apparently lower the volume on the airpods on the airpods themselves. I'm often changing volume on my wired set while walking as I talk on the phone or listen to podcasts.

I think they are. I too wish you could adjust the volume on the stalk of the AirPods but you can adjust it with just the volume buttons and the screen doesn't need to be unlocked or even on. They just added the ability to change the touch settings on the individual pods. I have my right one set up to advance a track and the left to go back. They auto pause when you remove them.

And they are connected to iCloud so you can switch which device you connect them to pretty much on the fly.

So you can’t adjust the volume on them? I’ve never thought of that before as I use the switch on a wired set all the time.

Do they have a built in microphone for talking hands free too? Every call I make is using earphones.

They have a mic, I use them all the time for calls and nobody has ever complained they can't hear me. I'm like you, I used the inline volume adjuster on wired buds, it took about a day to get used to adjusting it on the phone instead now it is second nature.

You can adjust the volume via the iPhone or using Siri for the AirPods. So there is a slight learning curve with that being hands-free. They do have a built-in microphone as someone else mentioned, which actually have excellent volume for louder environments.

It’s good they have a mic. The lack of volume control is a bit inconvenient though as I’m sure we’ve all been accustomed to adjusting the level via a remote since the 90’s. Digging my phone out of my inside pocket is not ideal.

However, I have an Apple Watch so it’s not so bad.

"Learning curve" is one way to put it. Does sound like a pretty signifiant drawback. I dream of the day when Apple or any technology company does not introduce some new thing that does not have some feature or aspect that is not inferior to the old one. (Stlll mourning the loss of precise text enlarging on my iphone 4 when I went to the 6, and my new Samsung TV has it least one important drawback compared to the old one.)

I’ve been a bit surprised with Apple over the past 18 months to be honest. They seem to be removing key features and introducing new ones that come with compromises. This whole headphone jack removal and AirPod introduction is a perfect example.

When I finally get an iPhone without the jack port i’ll likely use the flimsy adapter like most people I know. It’s not ideal but £160 for Bluetooth headphones is a bit extravagant and quite unnecessary for me. The fact they need to be charged makes them inferior for my needs to be honest.

They are worth it only if they stay in your ears. If EarPods stay firmly in your ears, you'll be fine. Mine don't and I have just about given up on the AirPods because I am constantly having to readjust them to keep them from falling out.
