So I'm a fairly new mac user and I'm trying to run a windows program on my macbook air. I've tried parallels, winebottler, and playonmac but have had no success. I'm not the most teksavvy of guys so I must be doing something wrong, would any of you guys be willing to help me out over skype? I'd really appreciate it

I had a similar problem. Winebottler and various other wineprograms didn't work at all.

You can always try to run bootcamp.

You could try VirtualBox. I've used it before and it's pretty nice, plus it's free. You might be able to use the same Windows license as you do for Parallels...?

Out of curiosity, what program are you trying to run?

I play online online poker and theres this calculation software called cardrunners EV which doesn't have a mac version out yet and I really want to get it, I left my pc back in toronto and only have my macbook air with me

The problem I had with parallels was that I didnt have a windows license and I'm currently residing in a small city in europe so I don't know anyone who might be able to let me use theirs, for winebottler and playonmac I keep running into problems after I've installed the program, it won't open. As for the windows software I'd probably need a crack or something but as this program is fairly straightforward Im guessing I won't need anything too much like parallels. Thing is I don't have my visa so I'm using my moms and if I have to buy parallels+windows+crEV its gonna be like 300+ when all I really need is a simple software to run just that one program.

eBay is full of crappy old used laptops for $100 and often less. You could buy one of those and use it or just use the Windows license from it to install Windows in VirtualBox on your Mac.

I have run Windows under Parallels in the past without problems. I had a legitimate license for Windows however. Now I use a dedicated Windows 7 PC to run my Windows software, I prefer to keep my Mac a Mac. :)

Buying a cheap used Windows machine sounds like a good idea to me.

I've been playing online poker as a main income for a while now and have many friends who make 6+ figures a year, and there are guys who even make 7,8 figures. Just cause some people have drinking problems doesn't mean we should ban liquor stores. Professional poker players play a disciplined skill game, the people who lose their houses are the guys who don't have discipline. Sorry for the mini rant by now I should be used to this stigma from the general public that poker is bad but w.e its cool. Anyways thanks for the answers I'm gonna see what I can do or if my options don't work I guess I'm just gonna wait till I'm back on my desktop.

No offense but how is it that you apparently don't have enough money to pay your mother back $300 when you need to buy software to support your profession?

Casinos are for losers :p
also I gotta disagree with this. I'm not a fan of pit games myself but who are you to say that someone who gambles for recreation is a "loser". I'm sure you have hobbies of your own such as sports, video games, movies or whatever it may be. To some people going to the casino and gambling a few hundred bucks at roulette is a lot funner than playing video games or something, problem gamblers are the very small minority, similar to the fat kid who plays LoL 10 hours a day, everything has downsides

no one said I can't pay her back but I don't want to have to find a western union then deal with sending her the money and stuff since I don't speak the language of the country I'm currently in so its probably going to be a hassle

You first said that it's your main source of income. Now it's recreational?

Anyway, maybe use an internet cafe? They seem to have plenty of those in Europe.

1. Buy a real windows license.
2. Download the iso and put it on a thumb drive.
3. Try to install it via bootcamp.
4. Boot into windows and install the program you want to run.

If your main income is dependent on a windows app, then don't mess around with these weird wine apps (they never worked for me even once) or even parallels. If nothing else works, get a windows laptop.
