All the responses are appreciated, but the question remains - has anyone compared the wifi stability and strength of an iPad wifi only vs an iPad 3G. I'm looking for info on any discrepencies between devices on wifi only - no interest in how the 3G signal works vs wifi. Thanks!

I completely agree. I am also very interested in this test (WIFI strength signal comparison between iPad Wifi and iPad 3G). Please do not post unrelated replies, this just confuses the topic.

Also, I suggest anyone who comments should disclose the precise iPad model he has (Wifi/3G, 16/32/64GB) to help us narrow down any source of issues.

Let's try to work together on this and get the most out of our cooperation

Thx guys!

Im willing to help but without jailbreaking my 2nd iPad, how can we figure out the signal strength?

On my jailbroken iPad, you can switch the Wifi signal to show as a number instead of bars, so it is a lot more accurate and you can really see what is going on.

Turn off 3G, take the wifi only iPad and go to an area far enough away to get only 1 or 2 bars. Stay in the same spot and observe with the 3G / wifi iPad with 3G OFF. Repeat in a couple other areas keep maximum distance away from router and still maintaining signal. Look for consistent results. Hope I am making sense. If anything, would be good to see if the slightly different backing on the 3G model improves wifi strength.

I went outside with both iPads (1 Wifi only, one Wifi/3G) yesterday and wandered around in and out of the extreme edge of my Wifi signal for a couple of hours, BTW this is 20 miles from any 3G coverage. As far as I can tell, with only my pair of iPads, it's a toss up. Both were able to connect within a few feet of each other & connections were dropped at almost the identical distances as well. I found one spot the Wifi only iPad connected and held the signal, although both showed one bar of coverage, where the 3G model connected then dropped off but could not duplicate this event thereafter. As a sidebar I also took my iPhone, and while my iPhone almost always shows 1 or 2 more bars of Wifi coverage than my iPads in any given spot inside the house, the iPhone consistently lost the Wifi signal sooner than either iPad. These are my admittedly unscientific findings on one occasion yesterday evening. Take it for what it is worth.

Thanks.

Good Job, thanks.

Agreed. And even that last guy who did some test (ARH1956) were also not quite what I was looking for. So I made a new topic about this. Hope we can get more relevance there: http://apple.stackexchange.com/ques...ipad-considerably-faster-on-wifi-than-ipad-3g
