Time Capsule. Router + automatic backup + external wireless hard drive storage. It's like your own personal DropBox/Cloud. It's great and worth the money.

Tried different brands (Linksys, Dlink) and was not happy with them. Bought Airport Extreme and regret for not getting it sooner. It's great with Mac too cause you can use an USB HDD and set it up as Time Capsule for Time Machine. Just get a refurbish.

i took my phone and ipad with me. And these are the only two devices i am using. However, i have another macbook pro, non retina, always left it at home for this purpose. And btw, why do i need other device to have connection if i am not with them?

There is this saying, use the right tool for the right job. You should consider it.

Devices are generally capable of doing things when you aren't with them. For example, my AppleTV downloads new content, if I used your method and took my laptop that would not work.

To each their own though, it is a pretty silly setup. Routers are devices with a single purpose, and they do it well using a MacBook Pro is pretty wasteful.

Airport Extreme or Time Capsule.

I've had netgear, linksys, d-link in the past and always had problems with them. They all seem to stop working after a year and a half of ownership, where I would need to unplug the router and plug it back in for internet connection to come back. Ever since I got an Airport Extreme - no such problems. Been working for 2.5 years non stop.

I've had problems with all routers in my life except the Airport Extreme.

Yes, it's expensive. But it works. With a Mac, its setup also couldn't possibly be easier. I've been using mine since 2009 and have no plan to switch any time soon, not until I buy a computer with 802.11ac.

i dont have apple tv, and i dont want to spent extra money on router when i dont need to. I have EXTRA MACBOOK PRO laying around, so why not use as a router. Or you buy me a router and i will be happy

It does seem a bit strange, but I guess if it works for you. But if you have a spare Macbook Pro, why not sell it, buy a router, and put the balance in your pocket?

The range and performance of a dedicated router would most likely be better.

Viruses from porn on a mac? About as silly as keeping the Mac as a router in the first place.

There are no OS X virus running in the wild. This isn't windows.

Extra money. I guess that iPad, iPhone, MacBook Pro and old MacBook Pro were free.

Just wow.

no talk of 802.11ac routers...

I had really weird connection/dropping issues with U-Verse and their integrated modem(it runs internet, wifi, and TV through it). There is a known issue with macs. I got an airport extreme to use as my wifi and have had no issues at all.

To +1 Sgtarky, I would wait for the Airport Extreme with the 802.11ac spec.

I'm very happy with my NETGEAR WNDR3700. It has a huge Wi-Fi range (3000sqft house with 2 floors, works everywhere).

i know but, any device connected to the internet is not safe. Especially when you go to porn website
