i was just curious whether the ATV can sync to a folder on a time capsule? so i wouldn't have to have my mac around all the time. thanks

I would like to know this too. I post my comment to make sure this thread stays at the top so it can be answered 🙂

It's been answered over and over in some of the Time Capsule threads.

Apple TV can only access content through iTunes. Since Time Capsule is not an iTunes server, the Apple TV can't see it directly.

You would have to store your content on Time Capsule, import your stored content into iTunes on a Mac or PC and then share it with Apple TV as a source.

It is not necessary to import content stored on an external drive to an iTunes library. You can simply add it by holding down Option+Command while dragging and dropping to the Library. This will add the media to your iTunes library but not copy it to the local disk.
