A friend has a failing iMac and is considering buying a Mac Mini soon. He cannot run Catalina due to software issues.
Any issue to be aware of?

The current Mac Mini is the 2018 model. It will run Mojave without an issue.

I have the so-called "new" Mac Mini. It is definitely a 2018, but it will ship with Catalina installed. In order to switch to Mojave, a bootable USB Mojave installer will be needed, the new Mini will have to be started in Recovery (CMD + R), the Security Utility will have to be run to allow the T2 to boot from an external drive, boot from the bootable USB Mojave installer, erase the internal drive, and install Mojave.

As a test, I did boot my new Mini, delivered with Catalina, from a external SSD with Mojave installed to confirm that I could boot into Mojave.

Awesome was probably going to post the same questions in a day or two here heh. My Mini will be here in a couple of days. Im game to try out Catalina, I think all my audio stuff is updated already, but just in case.. I really really like Mojave, so its good to know I can roll back. Better make sure my USB installer has the latest image hehe.

Your friend should be warned that many users running Mojave on the Mac mini 2018 are facing this kernel panic bug.

I wished I knew about this before I bought the Mac mini. Now interacting with AppleCare but the official solution is to upgrade to Catalina which I cannot do as I am using 32-bit software.

The answer is "yes"...

But... be aware that your friend must first boot to a special version of internet recovery:
shift option command R

... and then ERASE the ENTIRE internal drive, and re-install Mojave "from scratch".

Finally, migrate over data once the Mojave install is completed.

Thanks! I assume the entire process would be:

The additions in parentheses are mine. But logically that is the only way to get booted up from the USB installer.
Could you confirm these additions?

To boot from ANY external drive of ANY kind, you must disable "startup security".
This was the very first thing I did when I booted up my 2018 Mini.
I don't want ANY of that stuff running (and I don't care about "security implications", either)!

It's not necessary to change the boot security settings to start up from internet recovery.

I was not able to get mine to install Mojave from an USB key (Security Utility was used), and ended up cloning (CCC) an USB driver I had with Mojave on. Much to my annoyance. But it works, except for the seucrity update issue - which causes it to reboot when it sleeps.

this is flat out not true. Thanks to APFS you can simply just add a new container in recovery mode (Command+R) and then install Mojave to the container. That's what I did. Mojave "shares" the space with Catalina, and you have the best of both worlds.

As a troubleshooting method for the 210 kernel panic bug, I'm going to be installing a second copy of Mojave this weekend into another container, and then if I can duplicate the kernel panic bug, the second Mojave install will be trashed.

That's interesting. I installed from an sd card without any hitches. Well, I guess the only hitch now is when I try to boot to catalina partition/container by holding option, it boots to a Mojave installer. Catalina can be booted by choosing Catalina in the sartup utility.
