Ah, but setting up Face ID, then validating its use, both with a corpse, really isn't the use case we're talking about here. The owner has to be alive first.

Just doing it entirely with corpses, you may as well just do it with dolls. *ahem* I mean test. Heh. That sentence taken out of context. hehe
Yeah, with dead body stiffness you probably can’t rotate the head. lol

Edit: Well maybe once, but Apple wants it twice. lol

Edit 2: Hmm maybe at Body World (Körperwelten - Dr. Gunther von Hagens) somebody can try out?

Isn't it true that if a phone remains locked for 48 hours, you HAVE to use the passcode as it disables the finger/face id function?
With Touch ID it was 8 hours. I didn't think that had changed - so I'd expect Face ID to have the same limitation (but haven't experienced this yet myself...heh...haven't been sleeping that much) :)

Apple actually made a comment that they could’ve unlocked the recent mass shooter with his own fingerprint as long as the phone never powered down and it wasn’t over 48 hrs. But the FBI never reached out for that advice.

Pissing myself laughing here, though my question is an honest one. :) :)

Phone security is not something I directly worry about - I don't use a passcode or fingerprint on my 5S. But I find the issue very interesting, with all the FBI / Apple / etc issues of the past few years.

I say it was one of the first things I thought of, because Apple clearly indicated that they were basically moving to make the iPhone unbreakable, and yet along comes Face ID. Surely, I thought to myself, if you just need someone's face to open a phone, then anyone (law enforcement, bad people) could forcibly get a face-print by holding the phone in front of the person...

Of course as noted - this could equally be done with a finger print sensor.

Though - possibly not from the comments above - if the person's finger was severed...

And :) Glad Siri is referencing my Q for something.

TouchID does have built-in capabilities to stop this, its got a sensor and uses radio waves to check skin is "live", but I don't think extensive research has been done with cadavers as I seem to remember none of the articles were conclusive, with security experts hedging their bets.

FaceID would on the face of it (no pun intended) seem to be much easier to fool with a corpse? With attention settings enabled, you can unlock a X with only one eye open, so I'm guessing it would work with a dead body.

I dont think its possible for touch id. Surely the fbi wouldnt be having trouble opening all these terrorists phones if it was as simple as just placing the dead suspects finger on the phone. The government got into it with apple after the san bernadino shooting right? I was reading they were trying to get into the recent texas shooters phone, i think between that time period someone would have came up with the idea and testing it out. It came to my mind like 5 seconds after hearing they couldnt open it.

The phone requires pass code after 48h of no unlock. So they need to do it as soon as they can.

Just gotta remember to hit that sleep button five times before you take your last dying breath. Priorities and all that.

TouchID won't work on a dead or severed finger. I think it needs to detect body heat or circulation or something. Disturbingly enough, people frequently asked about this back in 2014 when people were concerned about thieves severing fingers along with stealing phones. Back then, just like now, people came up with the most absurd scenarios to worry about.
This is hardly likely to be correct since touch ID has been faked out more than once with inanimate objects.

Technically speaking, no, the dead cannot use Face ID. That would be pretty hard given they can't move and pick up the phone, let alone look at it! lol
