Can the FW 800 on new Mini handle a FW Hub?

I am planing to expand my media server. I now have a 2 TB FW 800 external hard drive with the Mini, but I need more FW drives. Has anyone tried a FW800 hub? Will I lose any performance?

Why not just daisy chain from the extra hard drive? Any decent FW device should have two FW ports on it to allow daisy chaining (I do this with 2 hard disks with no problems whatsoever).

I can attest to this! I have 2 x 500GB externals, and they run fine! Just make sure you chain them correctly :)

Is there something I have to do other than Mini to HD, HD to HD? Does both HD mount and unmount automatically when sleep or shut down?

Thank you for the diagram. I would have never thought it only works one way.

It's for consistency chaining I imagine. Computer links to top port, bottom port connects to top port... rinse and repeat. :D

And yes, the HDs automatically mount after restart as I just found out!

    mixed 400 and 800?

Do any of you guys know if it is possible to chain the following:
a FW400 device - FireDTV (Digital Cable TV receiver) to
a FW800 disk and then onwards to
the FW800 port of the Mini? Does performance suffer (throttling back to 400-speed?)
Could a FW hub handle the setup? If so, I could use the Western Digital Passport 2.5" 500GB external drive, but this has only one FW port, so no chaining.

From what I understand, if you attached an 800 and 400 to the same port, the entire chain drops to 400. You might want to test out some configurations, but perhaps use the FW port for the requisite FireDTV and then put the passport on a USB port (generally better not to daisy chain those sorts of things anyway I think). Devices and storage should be on totally separate chains/controllers. Try it and see how it works.
