since the iPad can change the Apple Pencil, what are the chances the iPhone could charge the AirPods in their case using a lightning<->lightning cable?

If you can find a lighting to lighting I see no reason why this wouldn't work. I don't know how many mAh the case is but it'd probably take a pretty decent hit on your phones battery.

On what? The AirPods are rated for 5 hours on their own and 24 hours with the charging case.

Five hours is impressive for a first Gen device. Way more than I would need in a duration. And 15 minutes of charging equals to three hours of listening.

Yeah. My LG Tones last like 12-15 hours and I never even came close to using half the battery before plugging them in again, and the fact that the carrying case charges the AirPods means I'll never run out of power.

I've never listened to music for 5 straight hours except when I fall asleep, in which case I don't need them to play music the entire night anyway.

I sold my LG Tones last year. Those were truly a great device. Just enjoy using the charging case and Airpods for travel. Very convenient.

The real question is: can the pencil charge the Airpod Case? Or does the Airpod Case charge the pencil????!?

I personally don't own AirPods, but I know the little dental floss box where they go get charged via lighting cable so why not just charge the box while the AirPods are in use.

I personally carry outside my home in car lighting charger, then at work I have another pair of MFI certified charging lighting cable ...

so there shouldn't be a reason why to attempt to charge them via the iPhone unless you plan to leave the box behind which it wouldn't be recommendable.

I can confirm that the iPhone won't charge the AirPods case. I tried using a USB A female to USB A female coupler and two Lightning cables. The Apple Pencil can charge because it has a certain authentication scheme that tells the iPad/iPhone to output its power over Lightning.
