I currently have it setting sideways on the stand (the only way it can go with headphones and sync cable) so my albums default to coverflow. I see no way to adjust volume, double tapping the Home button does nothing. The only way I see to do it without picking it up is: single tap for home, double tap for overlay controls, adjust volume, click close, click music to go back to coverflow. I would hardly call this quick or easy...6 steps, instead of the flick of the wheel I am used to.

Am I missing some easy to use control, or is this a massive oversight in the UI? Please tell me it is the former!

No it's not an oversight- it's a feature! ;)

Hopefully they will correct this by simply enabling double-tap while in Coverflow view. That would be good enough for me.

On a regular iPod, you don't have direct access to the volume while you are in the menus either. So that would make it approximately equal (or close enough.)
