With respect, the % of threads is perhaps not the whole issue, but the % of readers of the iPhone forum who would rather not have to sort through Android threads in the main iPhone forum.

Ok. By that logic, there are 2 people- you and chrono1081, that are in favor of this idea. That's a miniscule percentile of the 1800 people currently viewing the iPhone forum.

You have been disproven with infallible statistics. Good day!

I do not understand.

If you examine the poll I started in the iPhone forum, 104 people have responded so far. Only 28 (27%) of those people responding favored keeping the forum as is - allowing posting of non-iOS information in the iPhone forum. 36 people like my initial idea of a separate sub-forum, and 6 liked my idea of using a sticky. The remaining 34 people prefer to have non-iOS information excluded from the iPhone forum entirely.

Peace. :)

I'm not sure how accurate polls are in this context. The problem is that they tend to attract votes by the people who want things changed, and get ignored to a much greater degree by users who think things are fine as is.

It is true the poll could be unrepresentative, and the poll has been running for only awhile. However, how else can one judge what the readers of the forum want? And it's not like those who adamantly want things to remain unchanged have been shy about posting in the thread.

Besides, creating a sub-forum could be considered an experiment. If many readers object, then it could be undone.

Of course I recognize that for perfectly good reasons the management/moderators of MR might make a practical or principled decision not to follow what the apparent majority want, but I hope that this will be at least considered seriously.

For what it is worth....

Apologies for the double-post, but the poll in the iPhone forum is closed. 211 people voted, of which 3/4ths want some sort of change regarding how iPhone vs other phone threads are organized. The most popular option was to put such threads into a dedicated sub-forum (36%). The least popular option was to create a sticky (6%), and the second most popular option was precluding such threads from being posted in MR (33%).

Which shows how ignorant most member in iPhone forums are. They don't want anyone to point out the shortages of the phone they use, or want it to be compared with other one. This option simply does not work as it would be censoring and last time I check, all members of MR are entitled to express their own opinion about something (be it an iPhone or Android).

Creating a new sub-forum would not stop people from posting about Android in iPhone forums. For example, would iPhone vs "enter phone name here" belong to iPhone forum or other phones forum? It includes iPhone so I see so reason why it would belong to the other phones forum. And that is just threads. How about individual posts in iPhone threads? Should those be deleted since they don't talk about iPhone?

The thing is, this exactly same situation exists in all other sub-forums too, and has existed for years. From time to time, someone posts a PC comparison to iMac, Mac Pro, MBP, MBA, etc forum. Mac vs PC is probably the most discussed topic in Mac forums. So far, there hasn't been a need for a dedicated forum for such threads, thus I don't think iPhone deserves any special treatment.

I agree with the OP idea. I come here to get information and advice on apple products. If I want to see feedback on another device, I'd go to android central or android forums. This is because it's biased here since we all mostly own apple products so when another product is introduced as a thread, the bickering begins. For more accurate info, I'd prefer to read the bickering about that device in their respective forums or websites.

This is MacRumors forums, not Alternatives to MacRumors forums...

Then why are we talking about bloody phones? :D

It's been a long time since this site was focused on the Mac, the success of the iPod, iPhone and iPad has made sure of that. AppleRumors would now be a more apt name for the site. :)

I couldn't have said anything better myself.

"Star Trek: Voyager" Living Witness (1998)

Vaskan Ambassador Daleth: [after Janeway has ordered to shoot the Kyrian cities with biogenic weapons] Captain, don't you think that's excessive?
Captain Kathryn Janeway: You picked a bad time to have second thoughts, Ambassador.
Vaskan Ambassador Daleth: I want them defeated, but... but this is genocide!
Captain Kathryn Janeway: Defeat, genocide - why quibble with semantics?

That was a great episode.

For what it's worth, I browse the Macbook and Macbook Pro forums regularly, and they're well organized.

Also, I posted my WP7 review thread into the "Apple, Industry, and Technology" forum, because it didn't belong in the iPhone forum. I think having an alternative to iPhone section would be really great. Also, it would get me to actually start visiting that area of MR, and right now I avoid all things i-I personally can't stand the iPhone or iPad, but would love to chit chat about WP7, WebOS, or Android..
