It appears that most members won't encounter such prejudices until their post count becomes high enough to threaten those who already have high post counts and who are preoccupied with placing undue value on such meaningless trivia. It also appears that those who are criticizing frequent posters are themselves guilty of the crime of having high post counts or frequency. Truly a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Therein lies the source of some of the inappropriate downvotes of posts that otherwise don't merit downvotes.

Isn't it time for all of us to start acting our age? I am 32 years old and what I am reading here reminds me of high school.

If people are upset for being voted down, they now will be equally upset for not being voted up. Ridiculous.

People whine about their feelings getting hurt when they shouldn't be posting in the first place if a little down arrow is going to upset them. As far as I can tell that's why it went away.

But yeah the ignoring of public opinion is confusing me a bit too. The no votes alone are over 50% now.

That's why it went away you are right. :)

It helps for people to vent out though, I think it's worse to quote and start flame and bashing wars based on posts.

And surely only the upvote button is the worst of both worlds. It feels you are being denied choice here. If you feel you didn't like something, you should be able to voice it.

Like I said there's a reason why no forum, posting board or comment section has only an upvote button. :)

I seriously would still like to know what the personality type is that goes back and obsessively checks how each of their posts was rated.

Talk about insecure...

How about we have up and down buttons, but you can show or hide them in your own settings, and they default to off when not logged in and for new members. To turn them on, there's a little disclaimer:
Warning: the post voting system is not perfect. Do not dismiss posts based on votes alone. Dry tears using a warm, damp cloth and a comforting hug.

This addresses all of the concerns:
- Those that want it, have it.
- Those that don't, don't.
- New members, visitors, etc. won't miss this elusive golden magical post that managed to get a million downvotes, yet cures world hunger.

But that's the thing... downvotes weren't hiding any content at all.

It's just that some very childish people got butthurt when they went back and checked their old posts to realize that *horror* someone disagrees with them

And, for the matter: people sometimes downvote posts just because they find them abhorrent.

Take, for example, an art sculpture depicting a nude woman. Some say it should be looked at as what it is - a work of art. Others say it is obscene. A tiny but extremely vocal minority says it must be removed OMG FOR THE CHILDREN!!!1

Now, who is being immature, those who think it's a work of art, those who think it's obscene, or those who want the sculpture destroyed out of irrational fear of corrupting their children?

Then there are people who downvote because they like being haters.

I had one of my posts severely downvoted simply because I posted a picture of my MBPR. A lot of people think it's hideous and say I need to kill it with fire. Who is being immature, me or all the people that disagreed with how I 'decorated' my laptop?

Many nuclear power opponents get lots of media coverage saying things that have no scientific or logical basis at all. Many people believe them. Does that mean they actually know what they are talking about? What's happening here is different topics entirely, but the basics are the same.

All those downvotes/upvotes mean very little. The system is ripe for abuse. If you really want my opinion on this matter - remove it completely, including the upvoting part. But honestly, I don't care.

All those downvotes/upvotes mean very little.

This.

Everything else you said would only matter if downvotes actually hid/deleted posts. Your photo example is actually a good one – it saved a bunch of posts having to convey the message that a series of downvotes said perfectly.

- I sometimes vote something down instead of quoting and writing a comment about it. Not sure others do this as well, but I presume as much, in which case the downvoting button servers as a buffer system that partly eliminates negative and hateful posts that in many cases surely are completely unneccessary.

This.

I mostly like to express disagreement without starting/stirring up unnecessary debates or hate-posts.

It is ok. Everyone can up vote themselves.
Well now there's no way of balancing it out, some people are making that a bit obvious. I was reading a thread yesterday which consisted of one poster who started the thread and made four poorly reasoned and controversial posts. All four of their posts had +1, despite a load of people pointing out it was a load of tripe. So what does that +1 mean now exactly? Absolutely nothing, that's what.

----------

People whine about their feelings getting hurt when they shouldn't be posting in the first place if a little down arrow is going to upset them. As far as I can tell that's why it went away.
Can that really be the reason though? I mean who cares, really, unless they are majorly insecure. Also who even checks their own posts.

I agree 100% with the decision to remove the negative vote button. There are too many morons out there who abuse it.

Heres an example:

The other day, I was in some thread and people were looking for a link to the Steve Jobs 'Lost Interview' video. I was also looking for it as well and eventually found a link to it on some website and decided to share it with them. Unfortunately, the first person to read my post was on an iPad, and when he tried clicking the link it didn't work (it required flash). Anyway, in his confusion he clicked a bunch of ads on the website and got pissed off when he couldn't get to the video. As a result, he then replied to my post calling it spam. I of course knew it wasn't spam so pointed out that it wasn't, and later the guy even admitted that he made a mistake. But guess what happened, all the idiots going through the thread couldn't be bothered to follow the entire conversation, instead they just saw me post a link and someone reply spam and began giving my posts negative votes. And all I did was provide them with a video.

So yeah, people don't have enough sense on this forum to deserve vote buttons.

[MOD NOTE]

arn has made it clear that he's still experimenting, and since pretty much all viewpoints that can be expressed, have been expressed, and (especially) it seems to be turning into a place for personal attacks and bickering, we've decided to close the thread.
