http://maps.google.com may be a better solution until Google (hopefully) comes out with their own map client.

It is actually a bit more feature rich than the old iPad version of the native application. Though, some features have their limits in a browser too.

This is OK on the Mac, but on iPad and iPhone it automatically directs you to the mobile app site, which I've found very glitchy to say the least and nowhere near as user friendly as the original iOS app

::EDIT::

Yikes I saw an old version of this thread minus some replies. You are golden and running iOS5 now :)

Just seen you've edited this, I've just replied to your old reply.

I really don't understand my paranoia with downloading this firmware tbh as I download stuff onto my Mac all the time (although don't use torrents)

Out of interest can you hack/'infect' firmware, or is it just software?

Paranoia is totally fine, if you don't think about it, you are definitely not concerned about personal security. Too many people forget to think about what the source of software actually may be intending to do with it.

On Google Maps, the mobile version is quite similar to what the iOS application was like (I use it on my iPad running iOS 6). It can show you your current location, you can layer on traffic, and turn on satellite or terrain information, as well as show bike routes.

I actually think the mobile site is better than the old iOS application I still use on my iPhone 4 (still running 5.1).

Maybe I'll give it another go then. It didn't work well on either of my devices. It wouldn't locate me very well (had to try 4-5 times), wouldn't show directions properly. Also the pedestrian routes were the same as the car routes, and there's no street view. I guess we've been spoilt in the past ;)

There are obvious gaps in both patches :) . The best solution would have given us the option to choose default mapping applications. They have needed this same choice when it comes to changing the default browser and other sources for quite some time now too.

Does anyone know if I can downgrade my iPhone 4 from an iCloud backup? I don't have a computer with me and I'm travelling through Albania. I woke up and my maps were all gone.

After a week use of iOS6 GM I have decided to downgrade too. Miss jailbreak and Google Maps. I don't use Siri at all and I have my Garmin navigation app.
The only thing I might miss is Passbook.

I think I am going to do this and just sell my iPhone 5 when it shows up tomorrow, maps is a very important tool for me and the Apple version is pretty bad.

I've gone back to 5.1.1. None of the features for the iPad are really that special, and the loss of youtube was huge (I really don't want to watch it with a huge grey safari bar across the top).

If you have option/alt-clicked, it will let you choose the 5.1.1 files - that dialogue says the newest software will be downloaded, which means you haven't option/alt-clicked (I presume your iPad in in DFU mode). As for restoring your data, this is where an older backup comes in, I think. For me this was important as I had some photos I hadn't transferred off the device, otherwise I wouldn't have minded it set up as a new, factory-fresh device.

Edit: Ignore the data restore comment I made, it sounds like you're just hitting the restore and update button anyway. So - download the right 5.1.1 ipsw file, put your device into DFU mode, then option/alt-click restore, and choose the downloaded firmware.

I am having the same issue that Snerkler was - not getting any options when I hit the restore button except to download the newest software. I'm on a Windows PC and have tried holding down the Alt key when I click the Restore button in itunes, but it doesn't do anything. Any ideas on how I can access backup options?

Google has since released a dedicated YouTube app for iOS. Search for YouTube and App Store.

Im trying to downgrade from iOS6 to 5.1.1. I saved the ssh blobs before updating and now im trying to use redsnow but when i select the blobs i get the error message "the blobs could not be verified". Im on w7 and i have tried that fix that says to copy the files but it didn't work. I have tried to restore it using itunes and selecting the ipsw file but i also get an error and i also tried doing it with tinyumbrella by starting the tts server and then itunes but nothing, i always get error or the iphone gets stuck on "preparing the iphone for restore" mode.
Any other solutions i could try?

Just a question. I have my last backup of my phone the morning before the update (IOS6). Can I just click restore from Itunes and use that update?

It's for the iPhone, not iPad, though there is now a nice third party iPad app.

Still, not going to be going back to 6 again till apple have put in some more work. Maps and appstore are also awful, and just better in 5.1.1

You can't downgrade a 4S or 5. You can only restore to the latest version which is 6.1.3.
However, iPhone 3GS and 4 can be restored to any version you have SHSH blobs (the 3GS can restore to 4.1 right now without SHSH blobs as it is still being signed for some reason)
