Can you get approved for upgrade program if new participant?

I have read the articles of folks getting pre-approved to use the Apple Upgrade Program for the X launch.

Is that only for current customers of the upgrade program? As someone who wants to sign up for the upgrade program, I see no option to get approved beforehand? Am I correct?

You are correct. The preapproval is only for current customers with the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program.

If you want to join it this year, you’ll need to apply while ordering.
