Can you initiate on a Mac and then sync on Windows?

I bought an iPad for my technophobe parents and initiated (but didn't sync) the device on our iMac (10.5.8). Then wirelessly set it up with email and apps for them and then tried to sync it with their Windows XP computer with the latest iTunes version. It basically said it could not communicate with it and that I needed to restore to factory settings :(.

    Any thoughts?

Do I have to repay of apps if I need to rebuild it?

You should be able to initiate with any computer (MAC / PC) with iTunes, then sync later with any computer running the current version of iTunes. The Apple store is initiating all iPads there (if you let them) without any question on what computer you use at home for iTunes.

On the Apps, they are dependent on which account they were purchased on. If your parents use the same iTunes account as you, then they should be able to re-install at no cost. However, if you add applications based on your iTunes account, then they are able to sync, your applications will vanish, and be replaced with theirs.

Thanks, guess I'll have to troubleshoot with apple next time I'm at their house. I bought the apps under an account under their name, so they should be good.

Not a big deal. Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings.

You should then be OK to hook up to the XP machine.
