Can you pre-order at midnight and still use an upgrade program?

I am with Verizon in the U.S. with a device payment plan, and I know they have an upgrade program. However, it does not appear that you can do this online, which is a problem if I want to order at midnight like I always do. Is it in-store only?

I considered switching to the Apple Upgrade Program, which would probably allow me to order the phone this time. But then for next year when I upgrade I'd have the same problem, where I have to order in-store, right?

I actually had to call Verizon about something else, and asked this exact question. The rep said when you go to choose "upgrade your phone" and go through the order process, it should give you the option for the payment plan to choose (depending on which iPhone you choose)

However if you currently still owe on your phone, not sure if the same thing applies.
