I got a dud ipod nano, I don't get any sound out of the left channel (no it's not the earphones) and it says 'arging' instead of 'charging'. I bought it online with the new mbp. Wondering if I could swap it instore? If so do I need an appointment with a genius or just turn up?

Nope, the Apple Store and Apple Online Store are two totally different entities, with different inventory and distribution.

...and it says 'arging' instead of 'charging'.

My iPod is always arging at me.

just speak to a manager, they can take care of it.

if it is past 14 days though, you would have to take the Genius route

Bought my iPod Touch online from the Apple Online Store and when it went iffy I took it to the Trafford Centre and a Genius tried to fix it and then gave me a replacement.

I called the Apple Helpline first for advice and tried a few things and it was the guy on the line who booked me a Genius Bar appointment.
