Can you return an online ordered iPhone to an Apple store or does it have to be mailed back?

If they don't have it in stock can stock be ordered and would this allow me to just keep my defective one until it arrives?

If you wanted the same model and they were out of stock that is something they would probably let you do. If you wanted an exchange they may make you return it and reorder. I am not 100% sure on that and it may even vary store to store.

I tried to return an item ordered online recently to my local Apple Store and they wouldn't accept it. It had to be mailed back for a refund.

I went to one store, and they wouldn't accept it, then drove to another one, and they took it back.

I ordered the Rose Gold 6S Plus from Apple on preorder day. I returned it on Saturday to the Apple Store in the mall because I didn't care for the color. They took it back and gave me a full refund.
