I have a mac mini with a 1TB HDD with OSX and win8 via bootcamp. I need XP for one program. Can I run that as a VM even though bootcamp is installed?
Does a VM have to get it's data from a NTFS partition or can it use a Mac OS partition too?
    thanks

Yes, you can run it in a VM, typically VMware Fusion, Parallels or Virtual Box
You can choose to run Bootcamp from the Fusion or Parallels as well (or not)
