can you send a message to certain people on your LAN

I was wondering if it is possible to send someone on the same network a message through terminal. idk if you can but i really only care if its instant if its not instant then i could use email. Thanks for any help

iChat on Mac can find other iChat users on the network if you have Bonjour discovery turned on.
