Can you split Single USB Power Adapters?

I have both the (very small) Apple 5W and (small) 12W usb power adapters.
When I'm traveling, I'd like to be able to connect multiple devices to one charging adapter.
For example an iPhone, Camera, Kindle.
Can I simply plug in a slim usb hub and woila, have more charging ports?

Actually I just read on some reviews of that "Anker Ultra Slim 4-Port USB 3.0 Data Hub" and they said it does not work when plugged into a wall adapter...

You just need a cheap 4 port hub nothing fancy
