Can you use it as an iPod without needing to do a credit check etc?

I live in Dubai and we won't see the iPhone for a long time yet... but the temptation to buy one from the Apple online store just to use as an iPod is almost overwhelming 😀

Does anyone know if you can use it as an iPod without needing to go through the AT&T credit check process? Obviously, not living in the USA, I wouldn't get authorised.

No... all features are locked until it is activated. You can sign up for a pre-paid plan if your credit is declined, and I understand you can enter all 0's for the SSN in order to get the pre-paid plan options.
