Starting to think more about how I'm charging my new 14 pro max (probably overthinking haha).
I don't mind a slower charge. I currently use the Apple 20w adapter but it makes my phone very hot.

Apple does not list the 5w adapter as compatible with the 14 series.
Is there a reason?
I still have a bunch of brand new 5w adapters and lightning cables from old phones over the years.

Just curious if I should just stick to the 20w brick. Thanks

As BugesysSTI said, you will be just fine using the 5W adapter just with a slow charge which if you planned on mainly using this for overnight charging then basically wouldn't matter. Also to note, even if you used the faster 20W adapter if you have the optimize battery on even with the faster charging (mainly overnight) it learns your typical "wake time" and basically charges accordingly so again from an overnight perspective it doesn't really matter.

now i see it

The 5 watt charger was a good match for the iPhone 4 which had a 1420mAh battery.
The iPhone 14PM has a 4323mAh battery which is 3X bigger so it is going to take a lot longer to charge up with the little charger.
But yes- it’s fine to use. Won’t hurt anything.

I'm using 5W charger for iPhone 14 Pro, it's great for overnight charging. I disabled optimized charging because 3 hours is needed for charging to 100%. Same charger/method used for my iPhone X, after five years and 760 cycles battery is @81%. For 14 Pro Max full charging time would be around 4 hours with 5W carger, so no need for optimized charging really.

Thanks! Good info. I am coming from an X as well. Is there any specific reason to not just leave optimized charging on if using a 5w charger? Will it have any negative effects on the battery?

I’m using the 5W also for my 14 pro and optimized charging works fine with it… do you not sleep more than 3-5 hours? Mine is charged up always at least 2 hours before I’m ready to use it.

No negative effect. It's actually better for the battery, will not make it hot thus battery % will not degrade.

I prefer charging with a classic 5W Apple Charger. Slow overnight charging + optimized charging kicked in is the best. I only use a 20W fast charging when I’m in desperate need and don’t have the time to wait around.

With the USB-C coming to the next year's iPhone. I’m not sure what I’m going to do since 5W Apple Charger won’t be compatible with the new iPhone in 2023.

I'm lost and confused why Apple is not recommending using a 5W Apple charger to charge the iPhone 14 series. It gets the job done just fine. Is it because the 5W Charger has been discontinued?

In my case

It depending how long phone would be at 100% charge without using it. My phone is full charged around 3 AM and I'm waking up at 6 AM. That 3 hours on 100% is not worth keeping optimized charging on. If my phone staying at 100% ~ 5 hours I would activate optimized charging. Also, I don't like location services that is needed for optim charging and I disabled them all, only time zone stayed ON.

I’m trying to use only usb-a charging as a quick study
I do that all the time with my iPad mini and Nintendo Switch. Works great.
Me too. Usb-c is so awesome. I charge 9 devices on one usb-c station.

But I do try to charge my iPhone via usb-a right now.

Right I don’t think so. But I have so many apple charging cables I like using them overnight. Or in car.
Dang it! Apple doesn’t offer it. I guess I’ll have to use this adapter to charge via USB cable 🤦🏻‍♀️. There's always a way but That's so annoying!

So with a USB-C cable, if you want to use a 5W Apple charger. You're going to have to buy the adapter.

That won’t work with the 5W charger. It would need a male USB-A plug to fit.

I use one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Powerline-Durability-Samsung-MacBook/dp/B01GN0M6NE

Or buy online from another retailer. They’re pretty cheap these days.
