Because of iCloud. Encouraging users to store more and more data in the cloud means they're more likely to fully integrate into the iOS system and stick with Apple, why would they increase device memory size?
theres no reason to believe this. just as with their computing line, the iphones continue to increase in size after a couple of years -- once the component costs reach the margin level apple wants to earn on them.
consumers enjoy plentiful devices. theres no reason to believe apple wont continue to sell high-capacity devices on the premium end. the C is not premium, and naturally likely wont have the same capacity as its big brothers.

i didnt miss your point. i was refuting something very specific that you said -- that buying last-year's doesnt cut it for consumers. it certain does, and has been a winning strategy. i expect this to continue in the future, albeit with the newer phones rotating into the older spots.
i dont doubt for a moment that apple will replace the non-lightning, non-4" devices with the the C, but also w/ the current iphone5 -- same thing as always. this way they get two years of production run time on a given form factor.
