Because of iCloud. Encouraging users to store more and more data in the cloud means they're more likely to fully integrate into the iOS system and stick with Apple, why would they increase device memory size?

theres no reason to believe this. just as with their computing line, the iphones continue to increase in size after a couple of years -- once the component costs reach the margin level apple wants to earn on them.

consumers enjoy plentiful devices. theres no reason to believe apple wont continue to sell high-capacity devices on the premium end. the C is not premium, and naturally likely wont have the same capacity as its big brothers.

You miss my point..

i didnt miss your point. i was refuting something very specific that you said -- that buying last-year's doesnt cut it for consumers. it certain does, and has been a winning strategy. i expect this to continue in the future, albeit with the newer phones rotating into the older spots.

i dont doubt for a moment that apple will replace the non-lightning, non-4" devices with the the C, but also w/ the current iphone5 -- same thing as always. this way they get two years of production run time on a given form factor.

Why hasn't the minimum size been bumped to 32GB yet? Flash memory is dirt cheap and 16GB isn't really enough to use the device to the fullest anymore.

There's no reason for Apple to be stingy on this anymore!

It should be:

iPhone 5 32GB
iPhone 5c 32GB
iPhone 5s 32GB, 64GB, 128GB

If Apple would put those dirt cheap prices to work and find a way to increase the speed of the internal storage along with the capacity - that'd be great.

Have SATA-based storage (or better), don't have eMMC-based storage anymore.

I am of the firm belief that Apple will be making the iPhone 5C one memory size for all of the colors. I really don't see a company that controls their products so tightly manufacturing yet another phone with three different memory sizes.

Here's what I think they'll do and what makes logical sense to me:

iPhone 5:
-Reduced to 16gb Size Only
-Drops to $99 on Contract, $549 Off Contract
iPhone 5c:
-8gb or 16gb (NOT BOTH)
-$0 on Contract, $449 Off Contract
iPhone 5s:
-32gb
-64gb
-128gb
-All at the usual prices ($199, $299, $399 on contract, a bazillion dollars off-contract)

This also ensures all iPhones being sold have the larger screen and lightning connectors.

Done. Perhaps I should go be an analyst now. I hear you just have to make stuff up and write for a blog .

I think your reasoning is spot-on, but I think the iPhone 5C will be less off-contract. iPod Touch 16GB is $229. Cellular radio upgrade in iPad is $129. Add those together and you get $358. Figure the iPod Touch aluminum shell with lanyard ring costs more to make than iPhone 5C shell, but the 16GB iPod Touch lacks a rear camera. In the end I think you land sub-$400 for off-contract iPhone 5C (probably $380, but no less than $359)
