:D hahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahhahhahaha! :D

He made a joke everyone. He's joking.

I honestly don't know if its because of this but i was using my 4 for tethering as a home connection. I had just moved and didn't get a home connection right away, well anyway if i was really heavy on my usage watching netflix, streaming a football game or whatever the phone would get crazy hot even just usb tethering. Every hour or so it would just lock up and became unusable and had to do a hard reset (interrupting my movie). After 2 months of this the phones screen started turning yellowish and then one day just died. Got it replaced and everything but after this i decided i should just go ahead and get a home line.

This month, I used about 40GB on my home internet connection. I've used as high as 270GB. I couldn't do this (well, technically I could as I have unlimited with AT&T, but it's not reasonable) but if you can, kudos to you! :)

Just so everyone knows.... I was 100% NOT joking. Your phone was not designed to a be a router.

There is a reason that routers and cable modems are large(r) devices with vents on them and take external power from a wall rather than a battery/usb port.

Electronics do break from being used. Contacts can corrode and traces can pull away from circuit boards, etc.

Your phone was not designed to regularly pass as much data through it as a modem or router. You will shorten its life if you keep using it that way every day to transfer a lot of data.

I've been using my 3G tethering as my only internet at home for the past year

I just downloaded 15.4GB's in 7 days ( Fairy Tail Anime episode 1-48) using uTorrent

I usually use about 4-7gbs a month, but i wanted to test out how much I could download if I left my phone running utorrent in the background each night I slept

average download speed was about 70-80kd down 40kb upload

I doubt i'll download this much again in a week/month just wanted to test it out

I've discovered a downside. Apparently, devices connected to a cell tower will share the same IP. When I tried to download a file from a file sharing site, it told me I couldn't because that IP was already downloading. Not a big issue for me. Shows you that more people are also tethering as their main internet source right in my immediate vicinity.

With regards to performance, I must say I'm very very impressed. I was previously running on a 25mbps pipe and I still saw lag in loading sites. It wasn't the instant URL to Website that I expected from such a fast connection. I still get a very comparable experience. Sites load in a second or two.

Regarding heat, my iPhone was toasting hot but only when I had it hooked up via USB. That's likely from trying to keep the battery charged while doing some relatively intense data pushing. When I tether via Bluetooth, the phone is only moderately warm.

If it were possible to share a Rogers data plan with more than one device, I'd get an iPad3G and never have to get another ISP.

A couple of downsides observed:

- Facetime doesn't work on 3G so I can't use that feature.
- Home Sharing doesn't work. It needs a constant internet connection.

It's been nice having my iPhone sitting in its dock providing internet access to my laptops at home. It lends further to the concept of "God phone" as a device that does everything. Since I like simplicity, this is nice because if I can live with this arrangement, I can get rid of my home networking devices.

The bad news: My bandwidth used hadn't been updated in the last little while so those 143MB didn't include a day that I spent some considerable time on YouTube and Vimeo. My used bandwidth is now 1.5GB since October 25th. I have 4.5GB left until November 25th.

I'll continue to observe it to ensure I don't go over. I don't use bandwidth heavy applications every day so it may average out to less than 6GB per month but 5 days is 1/6th of the month and 1.5GB X 6 is 9GB.

Stay tuned...

Why not Jailbreak and get MyWiFi? No need to pay Rogers more money, and no need to pay extra for the 3G iPad. :)

Well, this was always meant to be a trial because I depend on a dedicated internet connection for my tv but I was really liking the idea of using my iPhone's data plan for all my other internet needs. In the meantime, I haven't been using my tv. Was it worth the $90 per month for internet? Not at all. I'll probably get their cheapest connection this time.

I'm gonna stick it out for a month with no tv. Whenever I switch ISP's, the one I cancelled always comes knocking on my door with 3 free months of internet and a better plan. Rogers already offered it to me the day they came to disconnect the line. Usually the offer gets better when they try a second time. ;)

I torrent, so even with AT&T's unlimited I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that. It's one thing to explain the jump in my usage from several hundred MB/month to several GB/month because of streaming audio.
However, to explain how my usage has jumped from several GB to tens of GB/month? Inconceivable. Granted, AT&T may never ask, but I always believe in having an alibi if they should ask. :D

Well, it looks like it won't work... I'm at 2.5GB as of today. Invoice cycle ends on the 25th of each month. It looks like I'll be going back to cable internet.

Experiment result: Not feasible.

It's too bad man. I loved the concept. My iPhone sits in its dock and provides internet access to all my laptops. When I'm out in the field, I have the same exact level of internet service. One bill, one service covers everything.

The 6GB would be enough for most non-power users. Email, Facebook and a daily dose of your favourite sites would often fall under 6GB per month. I'm a photographer and regularly have to download/upload hi-res photos. That's what killed me.

ATT unlimited here. I tether my MBP to I4 with MyWi. Total data usage for October was around 5GB. I wish the Apple TV supported ad hoc networks too (MyWi is suppose to be updating to support infrastructure). Then I can pay one price for everything! TV, phone, and internet. I do try to offset some of my usage by grabbing free wifi when available though.
