Considering it must have cost you several hundred dollars just to get out of your contract I'd think $50 wouldn't cause too much grief. And if you travel buying non contract unlocked phones is a good (but initially expensive) option.

PS how much did you have to pay in early termination fees to Telus?

You are misunderstanding. I have no option to pay $50 to unlock my phone. I would have done that. I have no option to unlock my phone at all. It will stay locked to Telus for as long as it exists, as they are greedy pieces of garbage that do not unlock iPhones under any circumstances whatsoever.

I thought it would automatically get unlocked once I cancelled my contract and paid off my bill. When I bought a 3g I bought it at a store with a contract (in Europe) and just cancelled my contract immediately, paid all the fees and boom I was good to go. I had no idea about these issues, and they're pissing me off. I have 2 offers of $650 now for my iPhone 4 right now here in Europe, and I have to turn them down and try to sell it on eBay for $400 or something? Freaking Telus, their service is **** enough already if they don't also have to lock my phone to them for forever. Never buying from a carrier ever again in my life.

It was YOUR mistake. "I thought" was your problem. YOU failed to do your homework. You were just making a guess and never bothered to find out the facts.

You are mad now but you will get over it! You would have paid A LOT more for a unlocked iPhone!:p

This is why I'll never buy a phone on contract even though I think my carrier can unlock it after 6 months of being on contract. I just don't trust them.

So how much did you have to pay in early termination fees to Telus if you don't mind me asking?

you pay whatever is remaining on your device subsidy

ie, Iphone 4S 16GB

$659-$159=$500

$500/36 (3 year contract)

For personal contracts with Telus signed after November 21, 2010, the ETF is equal to your remaining device subsidy plus a flat $50 fee. So assuming a $500 initial subsidy, it would be
($500 * (1 - (M/36)) + $50, where M = number of months remaining on the contract.

For personal contracts with Telus signed before November 21, 2010, the ETF is equal to $20 for every month remaining on your contract term, but it is never permitted to go above $400 and it is never permitted to go below $100. So it would be
$400 for contracts with 36 to 20 months remaining.
$20*M for contracts with 20 to 5 months remaining.
$100 for contracts with less than 5 months remaining.

OP should not be so sad. If you know there is a possibility you are leaving Canada so shortly after you sign in the contract, you should do your homework on what you can do afterwards with your subsided phone.

After all, it is not bad that your 1 year old used phone still worth $400, many other phones would worth next to nothing after 1 years of use. The $650 offer (which I think it is too much, I think they goes to about $500 on ebay) is for an unlocked iphone, which has vastly different value and demand than a locked iphone.

Or you could wait for the hacking community to come with an unlock solution, which is not guaranteed though. This is one thing I don't like iphone, most other phones can be unlocked easily by buying an unlock code from ebay.

Remember even if you buy an iphone at full price without a contract at $650+tax (same price as buying from apple) from Bell or Telus, the phone will be locked forever.
