Cannot access folder even though Im administrator

Hi, I have a Previous Systems folder in my HD that has some files I need. I went to that folder, then to users, my account and tried to access desktop but it says I do not have sufficient access privileges even though I am the only user on this mac with the administrator account. Help please!
The folder I am trying to access is my previous account which was also the administrator.

Did you change your short name when you started your new account? If so, go to terminal and do the following

sudo chown -R [I]currentusername[/I]:staff [I]/path/to/olduserfolder[/I]
