I have a beige G3 that I would like to get to run for use by my younger kids. Cannot boot up from OSX 10.3 install CD. Keep on getting gray screen with question mark and floppy icon. Tried restart while holding down C and also while holding down command option P and R through two and three tones.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this G3 to boot off the CD instead of looking for the floppy?

Mac OS X 10.3 Requirements :

"1. Confirm that your hardware can run Mac OS X Version 10.3 Panther
Mac OS X Version 10.3 requires a Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor, built-in USB; at least 128MB of physical RAM and a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer. Mac OS X does not support processor upgrade cards. Verify your hardware is supported from the list below."

Built in USB is the tricky part.... The Beige G3 doesn't have built in USB.

XPostFacto is a utility that can help you here. It "helps" Mac OS X install on unsupported Macs

Good luck!

I have used XPost Facto and it DOES WORK. However, there are other issues with OS X 10.3 and a beige Mac.

For one, you MUST have an enhanced video card - like a PCI Radeon to get any luck.

If you don't, then do not even bother. The built in video is just not supported.

For the record, 10.2.6 works just fine on a beige G3.
