Cannot copy ext hard drive to computer

I'm needing to copy files from my hard drive to my computer. Then, when I try to open the copy, it says "Item is used by mac OS X and cannot be opened." Also, the file size is zero kb.

The hard drive has a busted USB port, but I can still open files (if I hold the cable right).

I tried the repair disk and it didn't change anything. Any ideas?
