I have been trying since yesterday morning to download El Capitan. The download button on the App Store is greyed out so pressing it achieves nothing. My wife is in the same room and she has installed it with no problems. I have a 2010 Macbook Pro so there shouldn't be a problem but there is.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Brian

Did you try to download it and stopped it or it failed? Can you download something else from the App Store?

As a workaround, you could download the full installer app (about 6 Gb) on your wife's Mac, QUIT the install App when it automatically launches, get a 8 Gb USB thumb drive, look for "Install OS X El Capitan" app in your wife's Applications folder, copy the install app to the USB thumb drive, take the USB thumb drive to your 2010 Mac, copy the "Install OS X El Capitan" app to your Mac's Applications folder, and launch the install app. This process is what we used to call sneaker net back in the day floppy drives and no networks.

Yes, I can download other stuff from the App Store. I will try and download it on my wife's machine. Thanks for your answer.

I did as you suggested and guess what? It worked!. A strange thing happened after I installed it, I couldn't see any of my applications, then all of a sudden they appeared.

Thanks a lot
