Hmm.

D'oh stupid me.

Well that works but it logs people on to my complete computer and not just the Public like I would like. Know of anyway to rectify this? Plus I would prefer to have people just be able to log on as Guests (alot of them are not very computer savy, not like I can talk).

I'm curious about this too... I've never tried logging in as a guest when sharing files, and since I have a Mac being used as a server, I'd like to enable guest access.

OK, we verified file sharing works.

By default, the only folder a guest user will have access to is the Drop Box folder (inside the Public Folder) of each user on the machine. I'm guessing the permissions are a little funky somewhere, which is why you don't see it as an option when you connect as Guest.

I'd suggest you check the permissions of the Public folder in your home folder, and the Drop Box folder within Public. You can do this with selecting the folder and hit Command+I. You will want to look at the Privileges for other. If that is none, change it to read only. Feel free to post the screenshots of both folders.

It's also possible that a folder higher up in the hierarchy has granted no access to other, which wouldn't even allow that user to see the drop box, even if the permissions on the drop box were correct.

For more information, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461#sec1

In summary, if you want guest users to be able to access a share without authenticating, you will have to make sure the permissions for other are correct for your particular share.

That is what I get

1. Yes

2. They are the same (and they used to be able to connect to all of my Public and not just the Drop Box...even under Guest).

3. We are slowly getting one up and running, the problem is the water-jet computer we use is one of the first generation of PowerMacs and it has issues with the server. It basically needs to communicate with my computer exclusivly.

Alright a couple more things to try - I'm now officially stabbing in the dark a little.

Move the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist to your desktop and restart - then attempt to connect

Changing the host name of the computer to something else, reboot - then attempt to connect.

create another admin user, login as that user and try to restart file sharing - then attempt to connect.

Turn off filesharing, reboot, then turn on filesharing - then attempt to connect.

I wonder if something was hosed when you used the Migration Assistant...

I'll try all of that after lunch. Thank you for all the help. Hopefully one of these things works and I dont have to call in a Mac Store employee.

loungemonkey- What version of OSX are you running? Just trying to check some other points. Didn't you transfer your settings from the G4 to the G5? If so I'm wondering if you should just backup and reinstall then try again.
