Cannot find desktop folder on backup

Hi,
I had an accident yesterday and my macbook broke down. I asked my brother to give me his and I am now trying to recover some important files I had on my desktop. I usually have backups with time machine but my brother's macbook does not have it.
I am able to recover the hard disk but I can't find the files I had on my desktop and I need those more than anything.

Why not just put your disk in your brother's MacBook ?

Unfortunately I have my disk in my parents house where I bought the macbook. Any other suggestion?
