Cannot message a contact

I cannot send a message to my husbands phone. Have always been able to in the past. Since the latest update I lost all my contacts and had to reenter them. I did a restore from itunes but it did NOT restore my contacts.
I get an invalid number error when I message his number. I have deleted it from my contacts and every other place it is or was in my phone.
He can text me but if I reply I get the same error, invalid number.
I have tried all the 'fixes' I read but cannot figure this out.
Anyone have any idea what I need to do.
And I have reset the phone, turned it off etc! Many times

Make sure you have the area code saved for his number.
Also try sending with or without imessage if that is causing the problem.
If he's using a phone number or email address as imessage address.

Spent a long time on the phone with AT&T yesterday. They weren't able to figure it out either. Turned it over to the tech dept. They tried everything and it continues to say it is not a valid number. He said that somewhere that error is stuck in the system and it needs to be cleared by them in the software. Told me I would 'probably' hear from them next week.
