Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this forum, and in need of some help. I have a 4S, which was jailbroken on iOS 8.1.2, and which has served me well up until now. I made the mistake of erasing all content and settings, which froze it up and made it unable to load. I have tried numerous times, on 3 different macs to restore it, both in recovery mode and the black screen DFU mode. Every time, at the very end, with the progress bar on the phone just a hair from full, it stops and says unable to restore for unknown reason. Error 48. This happens on when iTunes says it is installing the firmware.
I searched error 48, and nothing came up but an older, outdated error [error (-48)]saying to delete the .ipsw and reinstall. I skeptically tried it out of desperation, but to no avail. I don't know what else I can try. Any help or advice will be very much appreciated.

First of all you were jailbroaken on 8.1.2 :)
Do you have the latest iTunes installed?

You're right. It was 8.1.2. And yes, I have the latest version of iTunes, disabled security, tried restarting computer, etc.

Have you tried with downloading first IPSW 8.3 and than DFU restore?

Yes, and yes. On three different computers. I have not seen error code 48 anywhere online, except one for early IOS that was (-48) and was an issue with network connectivity I believe.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to another way to restore this phone, or is it likely just toast?

As funny as it sounds, you could try doing it on a Windows PC

Sounds like a hardware issue.

I suppose it's possible, but it was working fine then crashed when I clicked "erase all content and settings" and it never came back. That just seems like a software glitch to me. Of course, I'm no expert on the subject.

I have the same issue.
Any workaround spotted?

I did find a bit of a workaround, though not an ideal one. I went on eBay and bought a used 64 gig 4s to replace my non-working 16gig 4s for $150. :) I figured if I ever get it to come back to life, I'll sell the old one. Or sell it as is. I just didn't want to be without a phone anymore.

If it fails to restore with itunes its hardware related.
